He blessed man wealth of knowledge and regarded him as the best creature of the universe. So much so that he has been crowned as superior to angles also. He has been blessed as the “Khalipha” on earth. No whoever uses this title. One who uses the blessing of knowledge in the best way becomes honored and respected among human beings. However, it has been evident that man can not spend life without other human beings and he works wonders with their help. In this way, he also cherishes the desire of being praised. These 46 people of my collection are unique in various fields and occupy a high knowledge status. So far as the doors of research are open, the position of their work can not be ignored and the possibility of their utility will exist. All of them are worthy of respect. We can earn benefit their work in one way or the other. The possibilities of direct cooperation with them will remain coming forth. And in this way the paths of easiness and battement can open in this regard. It is no more difficulty to get data on any topic or abut any subject from inter-net. I have got the biographical data about “Some Specials” from inter-net and have arranged it in an easy order. It is hoped that this work of mine will be welcomed. Earlier on, I had read another Book entitled ‘Rabindranath Tagore and World Literature’ by Suniti Kumar Chatterjee. Though the book by Suniti Kumar Chatterjee had considerably impressed me, it had not produced so deep an impression on me, as did the book by Frits Strich which instantly propelled me along the line of forming a world Literature Society worldwide. But who would heed me and who would help translate the idea into practice? I am not famous enough nationally, not to say internationally, to claim the attention of internationally famous scholars and poets to my idea. To make the organization a plausible one it was imperative I should bring under its banner those poets and scholars who have already attained international recognition or are at least known in the literary world. Fortunately, I was, and am still now, on the board of advisers attached to the Ansted Univesity, British Virgin Islands of UK. I passed on my idea to Dr Roger Haw, founder-member of the Ansted University and asked him whether the Ansted University had anything to do about setting up the world Literature Society, The purpose behind my idea of forming the World Literature Society, I wrote him, was to bring all national literatures on a common platform and to persuade universities all over the world of the necessity of opening a separate department on world Literature. I also requested Dr Haw to see to it that the Malaysia office of the AnstedUniversity house the international headquarters of the WLS. Dr Roger Haw instantly replied to congratulate me on my endeavour to have a world literature society formed worldwide and to assure me he and Prof GhulamYousof of the University of Malaya would help me as much as they could in translating my idea into practice and suggested to me to open email accounts. I heeded his advice, suffice it to say. There would be no problem, he added, for the Malaysia office of the AnstedUniversity to house the international headquarters. Then I turned to my British friend, Dr John Light to whom I have dedicated my first novel, ‘Gateway to Heaven’, for guidance and help. I have never found my friend John lax when it comes to helping and guiding me and he always steers me onto the right track. Besides, what did me real proud was an overwhelming response I received from around the world to my proposal and all the scholars and poets I approached gladly agreed to align themselves with the cause of forming the world literature society worldwide and insisted on me becoming president . I rather chose to be General Secretary and gave the post of president over to Dr (Ms) Rosemary C. Wilkinson, an American poet of international repute. On the International Committee are, besides Dr Willinson and me, inducted Prof Tanure Ojaide, African and Afro-American Studies, University of New Mexico, USA and Dr Michael Adams, USA as Vice-Presidents – Dr Michael Adams will control finance -, Dr Roger Haw and Ghulam Yousof as Programme Directors and Dr Stephen Gill. Poet, short story-writer and novelist (Canada) as Controller of Cultural & Literary Activities. On the Board of Advisers are Prof K Satchidanandan, Secretary of the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, India, Me Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharjee, Rditor of Indian Literature, Dahitya Akademi, New Delhi, Prof. Udaya Narayana Singh, Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore (India), Prof (Dr) Mohit K. Ray, University of Burdwan, India, Dr Maurus Young, Secretary General of the World Academy of Arts and Culture (WAAC), France, Dr John Light and Mr Allen David Stringer, editor of Phoenix, UK Editorial Board are, among others, Dr Balarama Gupta, editor of the Journal of Indian Writing in English, Gulbarga (India), Prof. I.K. Sharma, Jaipur (India), Mr Dev Bhardwaj, editor of Kafla International, Chandigarh, Dr Jaydeep Sarangi, editor of TITAS, Midnapur (India) , Mrs Ruth Wildes Schuler, poet and editor (USA) and Muhammad Shanazar, poet and professor, Government College of Commerce, Kahuta, Dist. Rawalpindi, Pakistan. My house will act as the administrative office of the World Literature Society. It is worth mentioning in this connexion that in a bid to bring to fruition my idea of forming the world literature society worldwide, I have edited an anthology on world literature entitled ‘El Dorado’ to which a good many scholars of international repute have contributed their research-oriented papers. AuthorsPress, New Delhi, has taken it on for publication. The book will be published some time this year. Many scholars have asked me what actually I understand by world literature, as I have been spreading around the idea of forming the world literature society worldwide. I have tried to explain it in my General Introduction to my anthology, El Dorado. All of the scholars who have raised this pertinent question themselves know the answer to this question. But I shall expend a few words in dealing with what is generally understood by world literature. Let us hear what Goethe said apropos of world literature; it was he who first conceived of world literature (Weltliteratur)’ The world literature conceived of by Goethe differs from the cosmopolitan interpretation of literature during the eighth century in that it can be achieved through the fullest development of the national character in each of its components. Such a concept could, as Goethe saw it, lead the nations to a greater understanding of their different national characters and characteristics and, above all, their various contributions to civilizations, World literature can be interpreted in two ways: (a) as a synthesis of all national literature in their entirety; (b) as comprising merely those works which have already attained recognition beyond their boundaries. The term ‘World Literature’ brings to mind a feeling of liberation, of such gain in space and scope as one feels the moment one enters a darker and more airy room. However vague the _expression is, it at least suggests intellectual barriers between peoples. ‘World Literature’ is often conceived of as an aggregate of all national literatures, French, German, Italian, Indian, English and so on. As we all know or are supposed to know, the world is both time and space, and only what belongs to world time and world space belongs to world literature. Time is a regulating principle in history which sifts the chaff from the wheat; a vogue from intrinsically valuable world literature would therefore mean the choice literature which has gained for itself a significance transcending nationality and time. There is yet another conception of world literature, one particularly current among historians of literature, for whom it had a special meaning. It stresses the fact that comparisons of various national literatures shows the diversity of languages to be insufficient enough to justify any division into national literatures. Various literatures rather show such similarity in course of their history, .the sequence of the styles of different periods, other ideas, themes and characters and so much mutual influences and overlapping that one cannot understand any literature by itself , but must regard all as an indispensable unity in the sense of world literature. Goethe conceived of world literature as a link between national literatures and, thus, between nations themselves for the exchange of ideal values. Such literature includes all writings by which people learn to understand and make allowances for each other and which brings them more closely together. It is a literary bridge over dividing rivers, a spiritual highway over dividing mountains; it is an intellectual barter, a traffic in ideas between peoples, a literary market in which the nations bring their treasures for exchange. World Literature is thus an intellectual sphere .in which, through the voices of their writers, people speak no longer to and of themselves but to each other. It is an international conversation, an intellectual interest in each other, a mutual helping and a process of supplementing each in the things of the mind. It is in the light of these conceptions of world literature that I have conceived of the ‘World Literature Society and it aims at synthesizing all literatures in their entirety. ……………………………….
