Commencing from 1978, every year a major PAF exercise code named "JETSTREAM" is held to enhance operational preparedness and combat readiness. Analysis of results achieved and lessons learnt during these exercises help in improving and suitably modifying operational plans, tactics and techniques.

The exercise was planned to achieve multiple objectives. All elements of the air force participated and new concepts in strategy were evaluated. Squadrons operated from changed locations thereby allowing mobility under simulated war conditions.

In his "Order of the Day" on the conclusion of the exercise on December 24, 1978 the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Muhammad Anwar Shamim congratulated all commanders, officers and men of the Air Force on the successful completion of the exercise. He expressed his satisfaction that all ranks had identified themselves with their assignments and performed their role with zeal and vigour. The Air Chief said, "It is our bounden duty to build up a strong and efficient Air Force, second to none in patriotism and professionalism, ever ready to repel the evil intentions of any aggressor. Let us rededicate ourselves to the noble cause and with God's help ensure for our future generations a secure and prosperous Pakistan."
