The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the Jamia Milia Islamia Mass Communication Research centre (MCRC) are the two major film education institutes in India. They have been known for their quality education, and graduates from both fields are currently at the pinnacles of their respective fields.
FTII is the most respected institute where commercial Indian cinema is concerned. It has played mother to a staggering number of film industry hotshots including Vinod Chopra, Mahesh Bhatt and Nasseeruddin Shah. MCRC is generally associated with the art film movement in India, among those associated with the institute are master director M S Sathyu.
Another place that has been considered a breeding ground for cinematic talent, especially in the acting quarters is the National School of Drama (NSD). As acting becomes the domain of trained actors in contrast to the pretty boys of the past, institutes such as the NSD have gained in importance. While it is primarily associated with theatre, NSD has also had many good offerings for the film industry its most recent Ashutosh Rana who has taken the industry by storm in 1998.
Film Education is not just restricted to these, there are several acting and technical institutes all over the country. While some of them focus on ad film making, several others are more inclined towards acting. Some of these include Xaviers Institute of Communication and the Sophia College Polytech Institute.
