Pakistan Gave Us: Abdul Sattar Edhi
Founder of Edhi Foundation, the largest NGO in Pakistan. Known for his extreme humbleness, simplicity and never taking a holiday in his life, this man has shown us how miracles can be realized. Edh...i's activities include a 24 hours emergency service across the country through 300 Edhi centers which provide free shrouding and burial of unclaimed dead bodies, shelter for the destitutes, orphans and handicapped persons, several free hospitals and dispensaries, rehabilitation of drug addicts, free wheel chairs, crutches and other services for the handicapped, family planning counseling and maternity services, national and international relief efforts for the victims of natural disasters.
The organization also operates over 400 field ambulances and air ambulances on a 24 hour basis and employs 3,500 workers and thousands of volunteers across the world.
Currently the Foundation is home to over 6,000 destitutes, runaways and mentally ill, and it provides transportation to over 1,000,000 persons annually. It has run relief operations in Africa, Middle East, the Caucasus region, eastern Europe and US where it provided aid following the New Orleans hurricane of 2005.
Guinness Book of World Records (2000) listed him as the operator of 'Largest Voluntary Ambulance Organization of the World'.

Pakistan Gave Us: Hakim Muhammad Said
Said was a prominent and world acclaimed medical researcher, scholar, philanthropist, and a former Governor of Sindh Province of Pakistan and was Pakistan's most renowned medical researcher in the field of eastern and Greek medicine. He established the Hamdard Foundation, and in few years’ time, the herbal medical products of Hamdard Foundation became household names in Pakistan. Within 6 years of establishment, Hamdard became the largest producer of eastern medicine in Pakistan and at its zenith he converted it into a trust, effectively dedicating all future profits for the development of health, education, and other nation building and philanthropic activities.
Hakim Muhammad Said authored and compiled about 200 books in medicine, philosophy, science, health, religion, natural medicine, literature, society and travelogues. He also edited some journals of international repute, such as UNESCO Piami, Hamdard Islamicus, Hamdard Medicus, Medical Times and Hamdard Sehat. He also attended over 100 International Conferences as Pakistan’s delegate while organizing many others himself.
The crowning activity of his life is the establishment of his life-long dream, Madinat-al-Hikmah (The City of Knowledge). It comprises Hamdard University with such institutes as Hamdard College of Medicine and Dentistry, Hamdard Al-Majeed College of Eastern Medicine, Hafiz Muhammad Ilyas Institute of Herbal Sciences, Hamdard Institute of Education & Social Sciences, Hamdard Institute of Management Sciences, Hamdard Institute of Information Technology, Hamdard School of Law, Faculty of Engineering Science & Technology, Hamdard Public School and Hamdard Village School. Day 3
Pakistan Gave Us: Roshaneh Zafar

Inspired by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus‘s work at Grameen Bank, Roshaneh Zafar, 42, ditched her World Bank career to set up Kashf Foundation, Pakistan’s first microfinance institution, in 1996. She started with a $10,000 loan from the Grameen Trust, Rs. 100,000 of her own, and 15 clients. Today, Kashf has more than 306,000 clients, and has disbursed more than $202 million in small loans to poor women. Kashf made Forbes’s list of the world’s top microfinance institutions in 2007, and U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged her work at the inaugural Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship last year.

In 2002, Kashf Foundation was awarded the Microfinance Excellence Award by the Grameen Foundation-USA for its groundbreaking innovations in the field of microfinance in Pakistan, and in 2005 it won the AGFUND International Prize for Microcredit out of 98 countries. In 2008, Forbes ranked Kashf Foundation 34th in its top 50 MFIs of the World.

She was one of the first Ashoka Fellows in Pakistan and was also selected as a Social Entrepreneur by the Schwab Foundation in 2002 and the Skoll Foundation in 2007. She represented the Social Entrepreneurs at the World Economic Forum in January 2004 and spoke at the Opening Plenary of the WEF along with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, President Obasanjo of Nigeria, Carly Fiorina of Hewlett Packard and Mr. Wolfenson of the World Bank.

Day 4
Pakistan Gave Us: Ruth Pfau (1929-present)

Lovingly known as 'The Angel of Karachi' and 'Mother Teresa of Pakistan', she has devoted the last 50 years of her life to fighting leprosy in Pakistan. In 1996, Pakistan was declared by the World Health Organization to have controlled leprosy, one of the first countries in Asia to achieve this goal, largely due to her efforts.

... A German nun by birth, she moved to Karachi in 1960 and decided that the care of Pakistanis would be her life's calling. She started with medical treatment for leprosy patients in a small hut of a slum quarter. The Marie Adelaide Leprosy Center was founded and social work for the leprosy patients and their family members was started. A leprosy clinic was bought in April 1963 and patients from all over Karachi, Pakistan and even from Afghanistan started coming for treatment. To date, Ruth and her workers have cured over 50,000 Pakistanis who were suffering from leprosy.

She was given Pakistani citizenship in 1979 and has received national and international medals and awards of the highest order, including Nishan-e-Quaid-e-Azam, Hilal-e-Pakistan, Hilal-e-Imtiaz and the Ramon Magsaysay Award, commonly knows as Asia's Nobel Prize. She continues to be adviser to the government on all leprosy matters.
