STAMP GALLERY
First ever postage stamp of Pakistan was issued on 9th July 1948 with the motif of the crescent and star with a leafy pattern. This special postage stamp was designed by the well known Pakistani artist A.R. Chaugtai & was approved by Quaid-i-Azam. This stamp is one of the four stamps that were issued to mark the first anniversary of independence.
Three of the designs were notable sights (The First Constituent Assembly building, Karachi Airport Entrance, & Lahore Fort Gateway).
All the stamps carried the slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” (long live Pakistan) – a form of prayer for the new born state.
All the stamps carried the slogan “Pakistan Zindabad” (long live Pakistan) – a form of prayer for the new born state.
The stamps were inscribed “15th August 1947” because of the prevailing confusion as to which date was Pakistan’s actual date of independence. It wasn't until early 1949, that this confusion was cleared by declaring 14 August as Independence Day.

This set was printed in London by Thomas De La Rue Company as the Pakistan did not have its own printing press.

OVER PRINT POSTAGE STAMPS

In this subcontinent the British rulers had introduced India postage stamps, mostly bearing the portraits of their British reigning monarch. Even before Independence, the question of introducing Pakistan postage stamps on the day of establishment of Pakistan (14th August, 1947) was examined. Due to complications accompanying the designing and printing of new postage stamps and the limited period then available, it was decided that the postage stamps and postal stationery to be used by the Government of Pakistan should, in the first instance, be distinguished by over-printing Indian postage stamps and stationery with the word “Pakistan”. They were over-printed by the Government of India Security Press, and later on by the Government Presses in Pakistan.
On October 1947, the Government released its first stamps, being from the British India King George VI Stamps of 1940s, overprinted with the word Pakistan, known as Nasik overprint.

DEFINITIVE POSTAGE STAMPS
st2.jpg

A stamp issued for ordinary postal purposes and placed on sale for an unlimited period.
Over the last decades, 17 definitive or regular series have been issued. The first series was issued on 14 August 1948 and consisted of 20 stamps. These stamps featured scales of justice, crescent and star, Lloyd's Barrage (now Sukkur Barrage), Karachi Port Trust building, Salimullah Hostel, Dacca University and the Khyber Pass; Mian Mahmood Alam Suharwardy gave 2 designs for this set: scale of justice and star and crescent. These alongwith the 1949 redrawn series, were withdrawn from sale on 01st January 1961.

The 1951, 1954, 1955 and 1956 Independence Anniversary issues were all basically definitive series.

The 1957, 1958 and 1960 Republic Day (23 March) issues were also definitive. Since then 10 further series have been issued, with the latest in 1998.

COMMEMORATIVE POSTAGE STAMPS

Commemorative stamps are produced to mark important events or anniversaries. They are usually larger and more colorful than definitive stamps and the reason for issuing the set is depicted quite clearly in the design. Commemorative sets are often made up of multiple number of different face values. Although there are exceptions when just one or two values may be printed.

THEMETIC POSTAGE STAMPS
st4.jpg

Over the years, the postal authorities have portrayed, commemorated and honoured various personalities, national and international organizations and events, the country’s flora and fauna, its cultural and historical heritage as well as the country’s development. Other themes include health, educational institutions, religion, sports and defence.
Since the 1960s, the government has featured a large number of both local and foreign personalities including Allama Mohammad Iqbal, Mirza Ghalib, Kemal Attaturk, Shah of Iran, Maria Montessori, Hakim Saeed, Liaquat Ali Khan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Tipu Sultan and Abdus Salam.
Various series have been periodically issued. There is no set basis for their issuance and these are released at the discretion of the authorities. Current series include Men of Letters and Medicinal Plants of Pakistan. Other series have included Fruits of Pakistan, Handicrafts, Moenjodaro, Poets of Pakistan and Wildlife.

SOUVENIR\MINIATURE SHEETS
st5.jpg

Postage Stamps are sometimes issued in Souvenir Sheets or Miniature Sheets, containing one or a small number of stamps. Souvenir Sheets typically include additional art work or information printed on the selvage, the border surrounding the stamps. Sometimes the stamps make up a greater picture. Some Countries, and some issues, are produced as individual stamps as well as sheets.
The first souvenir sheet of Pakistan was issued for Universal Postal Union Day on 9 October 1971. It was an imperforate sheet valued at 70p. There were no leaflets or first day covers released and 10,000 sheets were printed.
Other sheets include 2,500th anniversary of the Iranian Monarchy (1971), the Quaid's 50th death anniversary (1998) and the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of K-2 (2004).
