The exercise was launched on October 31. It involved fighter aircraft, air defence units and all the support elements at various bases in the country.
Air Chief Marshal Muhammad Anwar Shamim, Chief of the Air Staff visited major Air Force bases and airfields to see the operations which were marked by intense activity. Speaking of the objective of the exercise, the Air Chief said that it was meant to give the personnel greater confidence in themselves by providing them an opportunity to try out their systems and weapons under simulated war conditions. The important feature of the exercise was the involvement of senior army and naval officers by way of observing the conduct of operations. The Chief of Staff of the two sister services remained in constant touch and accompanied the Chief of the Air Staff to the different operational centres. Promotion of inter-services co-operation has received maximum attention from 1978 onwards and Jetstream exercise have significantly contributed towards that end. Corps commanders and other senior Army officers visited the PAF Command Operation Centre to familiarize themselves with the objective and results of the Exercise as well as the PAF's capability for tactical operations and air defence. They were briefed by the Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Operations), Air Vice Marshal Jamal Ahmed Khan and the Air Officer Commanding, Air Vice Marshal Khurshid Anwar Mirza. The corps commanders were informed about the new approaches to defence developed lately both in the domains of tactical air operations and air defence. They were also apprised of the operations undertaken in the various phases of the Exercise, including the activities in support of the Army and Navy.
In his Order of the Day marking the conclusion of the Exercise Jetstream 1980, the Air Chief congratulated the commanders, officers and men on their outstanding performance during the Exercise and commended their zeal, vigour and professional skill which, he said, was "expected of them." He asked the airmen to renew their pledge to the nation that they would spare no effort in making the PAF a "Dauntless and hard-hitting force, second to none and ever prepared to meet all challenges." He reminded the airmen that "only through preparedness, constant vigilance and dedicated professionalism will be able to prove equal to the task."
